What is Brown Patch Disease in Lawns?

A brown patch on your lawn might not seem like a big deal, and you might just think it’s a dry spot that needs water, but it could be brown patch lawn disease.

Why Does Brown Patch Disease Happen?

Brown patch disease usually happens when it’s hot and humid for a long time and the average nighttime temperature is around 68° F. A brown patch can also be caused by a lack of air, soil that is too packed down, too much watering, or poor drainage. When these things come together, the fungus Rhizoctonia grows. This fungus affects all cool-season lawn grasses, but it hurts tall fescue and ryegrass the most. Some warm-season grasses, like Zoysia grass and St. Augustine grass, are also vulnerable.

There are telltale signs of the brown patches that set it apart from dead or dry grass. Brown patches look like brownish-yellow circles that are anywhere from six inches to several feet across. Lesions that are tan and have an irregular shape and a dark brown border are on the leaves that are sick.

You can avoid brown patch disease by taking good care of your lawn: don’t water it too much, don’t add too much fertilizer, and aerate and dethatch it every so often so that air can get to and spread through your lawn. Rhizoctonia can also be killed by fungicides, but it’s best to let professionals use the right amount so you don’t hurt your lawn.
